Why 8.1: Never sold in the US, never cross-shopped against the GTI it should have been famous for beating — 280 turbo horsepower through the front wheels via a HiPerStrut axle borrowed from the Insignia VXR. Cheap, thrashed, and depreciated hard enough that buying one to abuse is the only reason anyone still owns one.

The long version

Opel built the Astra OPC as its answer to the Golf GTI and Focus RS, using the same HiPerStrut front-axle geometry from the bigger Insignia VXR to tame torque steer that would otherwise overwhelm the front tires, and European road testers rated it a genuine rival to hatches with much louder reputations. It never got the chance to prove that in the one market that would have made it famous — Opel walked away from the US decades before the OPC existed, so the entire ownership story is European, and largely working-class-enthusiast at that. Depreciation has been the standard hot-hatch story: steep, fast, and complete, which means today's typical owner bought a five- or six-year-old OPC for hatchback money and drives it exactly like the look suggests. Nobody is speculating on an Astra; the ones still on the road are there because someone wanted a cheap, genuinely quick manual hatch and didn't care that Volkswagen got all the credit.
