Why 7.8: The junior GTI, one size down from the Golf and never sold anywhere near the US — 200 turbo horsepower through a DSG-only gearbox, cheaper and less celebrated than its bigger sibling but bought and driven exactly the same way. Depreciation has been total, which is precisely the point.

The long version

VW positioned the Polo GTI as the entry point into the GTI badge for buyers who couldn't stretch to a Golf, and by the time this generation arrived the company had quietly dropped the manual option entirely — DSG only, no clutch pedal, a decision that trades some driver engagement for a broader buyer base among people who just wanted the badge and the pace. That positioning, combined with never crossing the Atlantic, keeps it a curiosity to American enthusiasts and a completely unremarkable used buy in Germany, where clean examples are cheap, plentiful, and treated like any other five-year-old hatchback. Nobody is holding a Polo GTI for its investment case. It gets bought by young European drivers who want quick and cheap over analog and rare, and driven exactly that hard until the next owner takes over.
