7.5 / 10
Involvement 8.0 / 10

Why 7.5: Mechanically it's a lowered, stiffened Golf R platform wearing a proper coupe roofline VW never bothered federalizing, so the entire US-visible population arrived through grey import or stays firmly on the other side of the Atlantic. The ones in Europe get driven like any FWD hot hatch that never got expensive: daily, hard, and without much ceremony.

The long version

VW built the third-generation Scirocco specifically to sell in Europe, reviving a nameplate with real 1970s-80s heritage while quietly deciding the US market wasn't worth the federalization cost for a niche coupe — a Golf buyer here got the GTI or the R, nothing more special-bodied. The R sat at the top of the Scirocco range with the GTI's mechanical bones and a genuinely stiffer chassis than the standard car, drawing buyers who wanted the coupe roofline more than any extra practicality, and depreciation followed a familiar hot-hatch arc: a steep initial drop followed by a slow climb as the model ages into modern-classic territory. It never had a six-figure collector moment and probably never will, which keeps it firmly in daily-driver territory for the Europeans who own one rather than pushing it toward garage preservation. American enthusiasts know it almost entirely through import forums and yellow-plate video, the same Forbidden Fruit pattern as every other Euro-only VW product in this index.
