Sound

The exhausts exit through the flanks ahead of the doors, so the supercharged 5.4 arrives as a dirty, thumping bass with the blower audible over it. It is a three-valve AMG V8 stopping at 7,000 in a heavy grand tourer, so it is volume and menace rather than range.

Rear seatsNot available

There aren't any — strict two-seater.

Front passenger seatNot available

No ISOFIX hardware. The SLR shipped with Mercedes' BabySmart transponder recognition as standard, letting an approved Mercedes seat go on the passenger side with the airbag disabled automatically once it's detected.

BabySmart was standard equipment on a car where almost everything else was an options-list exercise.

The long version

The people who bought this wanted the McLaren F1 halo without the F1 ownership experience, and Mercedes was happy to sell them exactly that: an automatic gearbox, a trunk, and a nine-foot nose built to arrive rather than attack a corner. Values sagged through the mid-2010s and have since climbed back past sticker, which says more about McLaren nostalgia than about the SLR earning it on its own terms. F1 DNA is the badge and also the whole marketing pitch, a name borrowed from a program the car never actually competed in. It is a car for being seen arriving, not felt driving.
