5.5 / 10

Why 5.5: A Tier-6 AMG gap with real owner demand. It is useful and loud, but still a performance SUV bought as much for badge drama as road feel.

Sound

The 4.0-litre hot-vee V8 barks hard on start-up and pops on the overrun, which is more character than any rival SUV manages. But part of what reaches the cabin is played through the speakers, and the turbos cap it at 6,500 rpm — theatre more than engine.

The long version

The GLC 63 S exists because AMG customers wanted the C63 engine posture without the sedan packaging. It is brutally quick, usable and loud enough to feel inappropriate in a school queue, which is exactly the appeal. It will never be the driver's choice over a real C63, but it tells a more current AMG story: V8 character migrating into high-riding family hardware before emissions killed the party. The sweep needs one modern AMG SUV below the G-Wagen circus, and this is the cleanest fit.
