Why 5.8: The CSL badge returned attached to genuine capability and a delivery-mileage epidemic. The cars that escape the wrappers are properly quick; the wrappers are winning.

The long version

BMW capped the run at 1,000 and let dealers set their own markup, which meant the buyers with the fastest checkbooks were not necessarily the ones who wanted to drive it — a chunk of the allocation moved twice before a first oil change. The stripped rear seats and lighter glass were real engineering choices in service of lap times, and the minority of owners who use the car for its intended purpose will tell you it delivers. The majority treat it as a numbered print: stored, insured, occasionally aired out for a video, rarely worn in.
