Audi Quattro (Ur-Quattro)

1980–1991 · 2.1L turbo I5, WR · 5-speed manual · AWD
4.8 / 10
Involvement 6.6 / 10

Why 4.8: The car that proved permanent all-wheel drive belonged on the road, not just the rally stage — a turbo five-cylinder with a warble nothing else makes, wrapped in Group 4 homologation history. Sold new in the US, so it dodges Forbidden Fruit, but survivors are getting expensive fast as the AWD-origin story gets rediscovered.

Sound

The inline five's 1-2-4-5-3 firing order produces a warble no other layout gives, identifiable from streets away. But the road car's single turbo and long-legged silencer smother most of it — the rally cars sounded like this without the muffling.

Child seats · ISOFIX

Anywhere in the carNot available

Built before ISOFIX existed, so there are no anchor points at all. A child seat here is a seatbelt installation, and the belt geometry of the period was not designed with one in mind.

Derived from production years and seating layout, not a per-car source. ISOFIX was standardised as ISO 13216 in 1997, required on new EU model types from 2011 and on all new EU cars from 2014.

The long version

Every AWD performance car on sale today, from RS Audis to AMG's 4Matic+ line, traces its road-going legitimacy back to this one — a heavier legacy than its modest 200 horsepower suggests. Audi actually sold it new in America for a few years, which keeps it off the Forbidden Fruit list that most of its rally-homologation peers earn automatically. Prices sat low for decades while people who wanted an old Audi bought an old Audi, then climbed hard once the wider market connected the dots between this car and every quattro-badged model since. It still gets driven more than its Italian rivals — the AWD that made it famous also makes it usable.
