Why 7.9: Lincoln put an aluminium body, 450 hp, a ten-speed gearbox and thirty-way front seats on a body-on-frame chassis, then sold the top trim as a curated interior theme with names like Yacht Club and Chalet and a concierge to go with it.

Sound

Ford's 3.5 EcoBoost has a hard, hollow bark at full throttle that the 5.4 V8 Navigators never found, and the wastegates chatter on lift. But Lincoln's whole brief here was subtraction — laminated glass all round, active cancellation through the speakers — so what reaches the rear seats is a distant six-cylinder hum.

Rear seatsStandard

Two ISOFIX positions on the outer rear seats, the outer pair being the ones the standard covers.

Front passenger seatVaries

The rear anchors are the supported route — the manual points child seats there, and front-passenger ISOFIX is the exception rather than the rule. A belt-mounted seat up front needs the airbag off, and cars with a rear row don't always fit a deactivation switch, precisely because the rear seats exist.

Derived from production years and seating layout, not a per-car source. ISOFIX was standardised as ISO 13216 in 1997, required on new EU model types from 2011 and on all new EU cars from 2014.

The long version

The fourth-generation Navigator won North American Truck of the Year in 2018 and deserved it: the aluminium body took the best part of a hundred kilos out, the ten-speed and the adaptive dampers transformed how it drove, and the interior was the first American luxury cabin in decades that could be defended in front of a German. Black Label sat at the top, adding a designer theme, extended-warranty servicing and a set of ownership perks, and on the long-wheelbase L it took a well-optioned car past $100,000. Six years later those cars trade around $40,000. That is the whole story for the index, and it is a common one for full-size American luxury SUVs — the used market prices them as Expeditions with nicer leather, because mechanically that is what they are, and the Black Label premium evaporates entirely at the first resale. Nobody is putting one away and there is no version of the future where a 2019 Navigator is a collectible. What holds the mileage figure short of the top is who buys them at both ends: original owners at $100,000 rarely use a Navigator as an only car, and the second owners are often running them in black-car and airport service where the miles do accumulate but the L's fuel consumption disciplines the routes. A very good thing, depreciating at the standard American rate, being used up.
