Why 6.0: The M850i undercuts the real M8 by a meaningful margin while sharing the same basic V8 and xDrive AWD, which makes it the rational buyer's 8-series — most of the pace, none of the M-division price premium or the stiffer daily-driving compromise. It gets driven the way any big AWD GT coupe gets driven: continent-crossing road trips, not track days.

The long version

BMW positioned the M850i as the car for buyers who wanted 8-series presence without committing to the full M8 — a lighter options list, a quieter exhaust, and a price that let the AWD V8 GT coupe undercut its closest German rivals by a real margin. That positioning attracted an owner base doing exactly the math BMW hoped for: distance, not lap times, is what the M850i gets used for, and the depreciation curve reflects a car bought to be driven rather than hoarded. Resale has been rough — big turbocharged BMW coupes never hold value well, and the 8-series line never built the following its E24/E31 predecessors had — which means today's used buyers get the M-adjacent experience at a steep discount on a car nobody is speculating on. It's a competent, occasionally overlooked GT car, not a future classic anybody is betting on.
