Why 6.8: The S58 engine is objectively one of the great production sixes — 503 hp, a linear powerband that rewards commitment and a sound M5 buyers are already mourning. The G82 grille became a culture-war flashpoint but has not deterred buyers who drive the car instead of photographing it.

The long version

BMW’s G82 M4 arrived with the kidneys that launched a thousand forum arguments, and a year later nobody who drives the car cares about the grille because the S58 inline-six is as good as BMW M has made since the naturally aspirated S65. The Competition spec is how most get bought — xDrive for everyday use, rear-wheel drive for the purists — and the annual mileage data shows a car that actually gets driven: track days, back-road commutes, the occasional long motorway run. Values are depreciating at a normal M car rate, which means aggressive but not catastrophic; the used market is deep enough to absorb supply without distress pricing.
